Jute plant stems can be further refined into smaller and softer strands. The small rough strands are generally braided into ropes (some over two inches in diameter) and used for mooring ocean liners. The small strands can also be softened and braided into much finer roping that can then be sewn into rugs or with more refinement, table mats like our Makuri family. The Makuri collection retains the natural coloring of the original jute but use softer processed fibers.
